Black Jack – also referred to as ‘Chemin de Fer’ and ‘pontoon’ – is a game that nowadays is commonly found in a betting house with players attempting their fortune on acquiring the elusive ‘21′. It is commonly believed that the game started in France during the 1600’s. However, as with most other gambling games the exact evolution of the game is a mystery.
Pontoon was brought to the United States following the French Revolution, but the game didn’t become favored in the casinos until the house offered payouts as a bonus. This was the only way that appeared to get gamblers gambling on pontoon. One variation on the bonus pay out was for a player to acquire ‘21′ with the black jack card (worth 10 points) and an ace (worth 11 points). With the increasing popularity of the game the pay outs were phased out but the name of the game ‘blackjack’ stayed.
Black jack isn’t just about acquiring an immediate ‘21′, but the main challenge is to defeat the croupier without busting. The casino clearly has an edge over the gambling players in the long term, but with twenty-one the player retains an element of choice.
Since 1931 when America initial approved gambling, twenty-one has grown into a classic casino card game. Furthermore, it is the combination of both skill and mathematics employed in chemin de fer that has made the game massively loved. Blackjack gives an alluring proposition to any scientist, math guy or wagering player wanting to analyze the tactic of the game.
